This volume brings together the papers from the Seventeenth Annual Southern California Cervantes Symposium, UCLA, 7-9 April 2005. With the exception of the keynote address by Augustin Redondo and a rousing final debate between Daniel Eisenberg and Tom Lathrop, the symposium was organized to present the work of younger and mid-career scholars, and to suggest the kinds of courses Cervantes studies may take in the twenty-first century. The papers span areas as diverse as gender studies (Velasco), eroticism (Amat), socio-materialist approaches (Castillo, Liu, Reed), film and contemporary pop culture (Burningham, Simerka), and offer reassurance that historically grounded humanism is still alive and well (Alcala Galan, Childers, Creel, Maestro).
