本書は、ポルトガル初の民主主義体制である第一共和政(1910-1926年)を包括的に扱った研究書です。著者は西欧史やポルトガル語圏アフリカの歴史との関連で近代ポルトガル史を教える中で、どの言語でも入門的な解説書が存在しないことに気づき、本書を執筆しました。王政崩壊から共和政の樹立、第一次世界大戦への参戦、シドニオ・パイス大統領の「新共和国」、そして軍事クーデタによる共和政の終焉まで、激動の16年間を丁寧に追います。未公刊資料を含むポルトガル、英国、米国の多様な史料に基づき、歴史叙述と解釈を組み合わせた内容となっています。巻末には首相・大統領リスト、政治組織一覧、用語集も収録され、この時代を理解するための貴重な入門書です。

The purpose of this study is to provide a concise yet full treatment of Portugal’s first attempt at democracy, the First Republic, 1910-26. When I began to teach the history of modern Portugal and to attempt to relate it to the history of Western Europe and to the past of Portuguese-speaking Africa, I found that no adequate, introductory treatment of the First Republic existed in any language. In this study I have attempted to combine narrative with interpretation and I have drawn upon a variety of unpublished and published materials in Portugal, Britain, and the United States. - From Preface
