Satire and Invective in Enlightened Spain is a study and edition of Crotalogía, o ciencia de las castañuelas (1792), by Fray Juan Fernández de Rojas. The introductory study consists of an overview of Fernández de Rojas’ life and works, descriptions of extant editions of Crotalogía and a stemma, as well as a discussion of Fernández de Rojas’ sources. The text follows that of the first edition of Crotalogía, with a full complement of textual variants and explanatory footnotes. This is the first critical, annotated edition of Fernández de Rojas’ satirical masterpiece.
